SW Developments and Developers

Waterside Mall Development

The developers are Forest City Washington, Inc, Vornado/Charles E. Smith,  and Bresner & Reiner, Inc

The subcontractor Wrecking Corporation of America is responsbile for the demolition of Waterside Mall.

The Waterside Mall has been demolished.

There are plans to house some DC government agencies at the site once the development is complete (see the developer's press release).  This project will also re-open 4th St between I St SW and M St SW.

Here is a link to the developers' website.

We currently have no information on how much, if any, public money or incentives are earmarked for this project.  However, the promise for the DC government to lease office space there is a form of a public subsidy.

SW Waterfront Development

The lead developer is Hoffman-Struever.  The Southwest Waterfront Project is a public/private partnership between Hoffman-Struever Waterfront and the District of Columbia.  They expect to begin development in 2010, and finish in 2017.  You can see the developer's web-site here.

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty announced the financial terms of a deal with Hoffman-Struever Waterfront LLC in January 2008 for a $1.1 billion redevelopment of the city's Southwest waterfront.

The city will provide up to $200 million in public financing for the deal, almost one-fifth of the total cost, to pay for the developers to build public parks, piers and infrastructure.

The public investment will pay for bike trails, promenades and public piers, according to Fenty, "for those who want to see more than just concrete along the waterfront." He said the project would bring 2,880 jobs and 100 new businesses.

Arena Stage Expansion

The Arena Stage, at 6th and M St SW, broke ground on its expansion on January 2008, and plans to re-open in fall 2010.  There is a timeline here.

This project is, to the best of our knowedge, entirely financed with private money.
